Ingredients
 
 

  • 1 kg beef mince
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp spice for mince or spice for steak and chops
  • 1 tsp garlic crushed
  • 2 onions diced
  • 1 80g sachet tomato paste
  • 10 ml vegetable oil
  • 750 ml oil to bake vetkoek

Instructions
 

  • Fry the onions in the oil.
  • Add mince and stir until brown.
  • Add spices and garlic.
  • Add tomato paste and 20 ml water.
  • Simmer until dry while stirring.

Vetkoek (fatcakes)

  • If bought, make sure the dough is room temperature by the time you bake the vetkoek. Spread dough out over a well oiled surface to a thickness of approximately 1½ cm.
  • Cut in squares of approximately 6 x 6cm. Make them smaller for cocktail bites or larger if you like.
  • Stretch each piece of dough slightly before carefully sliding them into hot oil. This will help form a hollow for the filling.
  • Deep fry for about 3 minutes per side, turning them only once. Do not put too many together in the pot or pan as they rise out again.
  • Fill the vetkoek and enjoy!
